Working While Studying in Canada

Heitor Castro, Brazilian International Student, shares his experience

Toronto, Canada, is a multicultural and diverse urban centre that offers a variety of outdoor activities and beautiful parks. The quality of life, public transportation, and entertainment make Toronto one of Canada’s top destinations for international students.

Studying in Canada has another perk: international students might be eligible to work while completing their programs. Before coming to Canada, I double-checked the options for working on and off-campus so I could get valuable work experience alongside my education.

First, I found out that my Study Permit allowed me to work on or off campus without a specific work permit. In my case, it was stated that I could accept employment on the campus (Humber!) I’m registered at for my fulltime studies. Another possibility granted in my Study Permit was that I might work off-campus for 20 hours per week during the semester and full-time during regular breaks. For more information, see the Government of Canada website: Work on Campus and Work off Campus.

I also applied for a Co-op Work Permit, so I could complete the mandatory hours needed for my program’s Field Placement (see the list of Humber College’s programs and their requirements here). Once I had this specific co-op work permit, I started searching for internships. Right now, I’m glad to be part of the Marketing & Communications Team at the Humber International Centre! I’m getting work experience and also accomplishing the amount of work placement hours needed to graduate.

After graduating, I intend to continue my professional development in Canada. In order to fulfill this objective, I will have to apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWPP). A PGWPP might be issued for the duration equivalent to the length of my program (two years) or up to a maximum of three years.

A good source of information for jobs and opportunities in Canada is the Humber Career Centre which also offers exclusive services for students and alumni such as resume and cover letter reviews and mock interviews to help students prepare for their career in Canada. I have already started using their resources so that I will be well prepared for the Canadian labour market when I graduate later this year!

By: Matthew McDonald, International Student Advisor at Humber's Lakeshore Campus

We’ve received many questions about income taxes over the past few weeks from students who weren’t able to attend our workshopsabout money, budgeting, and taxes (in January and February).
The International Centre does not have any tax experts on staff and is not able to advise on income tax questions. However, we do want to provide information to help you understand the Canadian tax system and what you should do.

Do international students need to file taxes?
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is responsible for administering tax programs in Canada. It has created a video series to explain Canada’s taxation system and answer important questions such as “Do international students have to file taxes?”. Click hereto access the video series.
The CRA also has information for international students on this page.

What documents do students need from Humber?
Each person’s tax situation will be different. However, all Humber students should download a T2202A form from their MyHumber account. Keep a copy of this form.

Tip #1: Make sure that your browser allows pop-up windows. Otherwise, the T2202A form will not appear.
Tip #2: If you are no longer a Humber student and/or are unable to access your MyHumber account, please contact the Registrar’s Office by e-mailing enquiry@humber.ca.

If you are currently living in Residence on campus, then you should read this information as well.

What about students who started in January 2016?
The income tax year follows the calendar year (January 2015 to December 2015). This information is for students who were in Canada in 2015.

Can someone help in person?
Yes! HSF has partnered with CRA to offer a community income tax clinic from March 22 to April 20, 2016. Appointment bookings will open March 14th 2016 at http://humberlife.com/services/tax-clinic/

Locations:
North: KX202
Lakeshore: K204

If you want to learn how to complete your taxes yourself attend the HSF tax workshop. Tax Workshop bookings will open March 14th 2016 at http://humberlife.com/services/tax-clinic/
North: March 21, 10 – 11:30 am, in KX202
Lake: March 21, 2 – 3:30 pm, in K204
Please note you must bring your own laptop to the workshop.
Please direct all questions about this program to HSF.

If you aren’t able to use HSF’s services, you may be able to receive support through another community tax program in the city. Please see herefor a list of other options.

Is there anything else international students should know?Beware of a recent phone scam by fraudsters pretending to be the CRA or police officers and making threats. The CRA typically communicates by mail (post) or through its online system. Read this news story and the CRA instructions to protect yourself against fraud.

What Motivated you to apply for IYIP?

I was motivated to apply to the IYIP program because I believe that international experience matters. By interning abroad, I hope to immerse myself in a different culture, to learn about different perspectives, and to approach problems in different ways.

What are your personal and professional goals?

For this program, I hope to develop a broader understanding of the world, current events and topics related to development in Latin America. I also hope to build upon my studies and learn about issues of empowerment, sustainability, equality, marginalization and social movements within the context of Bolivia.

Bachelor’s Degree, Political Science, Glendon College at York University – 2011

Hola a todos! My name is Maria Hortensia Gutierrez, but in La Paz I am referred to as Hortensia because apparently it is much easier (too many Marias)

What motivated you to apply for IYIP?

I was motivated to enroll in the Global Citizenship Certificate program and the IYIP program because over the past few years working as a flight attendant I have had the opportunity to see many countries and experience many cross cultural interactions. I thought this would be something I would enjoy very much.

What are your personal and professional goals?

I am very excited to embark on this new adventure and to contribute to the Save the Children International team. I hope to gain more experience with working in an NGO and in the International Development community.

Business Admin Student Enjoys Diversity in Education

Business Admin student involved in everything from local CafeWars to outwitting tigers in rural India

Second year Business Administration student Ranbir Sangha is enjoying the diversity of a Humber education. As a member of ENACTUS, a student-driven entrepreneurial club at The Business School, Ranbir has gained valuable experience learning how to promote events, as well as being part of them. CafeWars, an inaugural event organized by ENACTUS, saw 23 students working in a team competition using simulation software to start-up a cafe business. At the end of the competition, students were surveyed and results tabulated towards finding ways to promote this competition between colleges and high schools. “This experience is helping me develop the skills and knowledge I need to not only work with a start-up, but to manage my own.”

Asked about other experiences students can gain from joining ENACTUS, Ranbir immediately responds: “Tiger Honey”. This pilot project has been developed to reduce tiger-related deaths in rural India. Honey is the main source of revenue for villagers who trek into the jungle to forage for it — and encounter tigers. The risk of death is high. Humber students are piloting a project in which they will research manmade bee hives that would allow villagers to harvest honey without risking their lives in the jungle, in a sustainable way that does not destroy the hives. Says Ranbir, “This project is very exciting to the students as it involves a real-life situation and all of the practical aspects of everything we have learned in class, from research to project implementation to sustainability.”

“I have learned so much about start-up enterprises, from keeping track of revenue and expenses, to running a functioning business to all aspects of marketing. I have a really good perspective and look forward to working for a start-up in the future, or managing my own.”

My journey to Humber was my first time travelling without my parents and without my friends. It was my first time away from home.

When I was in school I kept telling people that one day I would study abroad. But I didn’t have any specific place in mind. My parents are getting older, my brother had already come to Canada and I didn’t think I could find the money. I don’t know if it was luck but one day my brother told me ‘OK, I will take care of the money. Just come here. You need to come.’

I couldn’t see much of a career path in India. I have a Masters Degree in Sports Nutrition and I was having trouble finding a job. So I thought, let's take a bit of a plunge and see what happens. I was searching for the 10 best colleges in Toronto and Humber kept coming up. I thought to myself, this has to mean something.

So I went to an agency and applied to Humber.
When I got my acceptance letter, I cried. My mom kept asking me "What’s happening?" I told her I got in and she said "I knew you would".

I am from Mumbai city. It is thousands of kilometers away from Humber (a 21 hour plane flight). When I got to the airport I had a bunch of close friends and family come see me off. They kept me laughing and talking about all the good times we had together. But then I had to go and I couldn’t even speak.

I remember my mom saying to me, ‘You’ve been strong, you have dreams of going there. Don’t stop now. Don’t cry. We are here for you and with all the technology around we’re not far away.’

I had a break at Zurich and then flew to Canada. I couldn’t sleep. The plane ride was like a see-saw. When it crossed the ocean there was a lot of turbulence, so the plane was flying all over the place - up down, left right. When the plane finally stopped, I threw up! It was so embarrassing. I hate roller coasters and the plane ride to Canada was pretty much a roller coaster ride.

When I got off the plane I was so excited. I had to go out and see what Canada actually looked like. I’d seen pictures of this huge tower but I didn’t even know what it was called. So one of the first things I did was go and find the CN Tower. I looked around downtown finding new places and eating new foods. It was incredible!

One of the coolest parts of moving here is being able to connect with people from all over India. When I was India, people would often keep to their different states, but here they all mingle together.

I think my favourite part of moving here is my job that I have on campus. I’ve been looking for a job ever since I was in India and I haven’t been able to come across anything. I remember telling my mom, “I feel so worthless, I have a masters degree and I can’t even get a job”. When I applied for this job, I was so nervous but my mom said, "you know what? Monday you’re gonna get a call." And believe it or not, Monday I got a call telling me I had been selected for an interview. The job is about helping other international students transitioning into Canada. It’s been fun, but also a way to use my perspective and give back to other students. If I can help other international students get over the cultural shock, that will mean a lot to me.

After coming here I made a close friend. Her name is Jane and she is from Russia. Unlike me, she didn’t have anyone to help her into Canada. She inspires me so much. I have had family support but she didn't. When she came to Canada she made contacts by herself and is now an instructor at a Mississauga gym. She even has her own car. She has transitioned into Canada in way I can’t even describe.

Looking at Jane I can’t but think… this is Woman Power. She has done so many things on her own. She teaches me so many things. The biggest being that you have to be your own hero.

Kent Schroeder was surprised and, yes, happy to receive an award for his research on Bhutan’s unique development strategy, Gross National Happiness.

Schroeder, program coordinator of The Business School’s International Development Degree, received the “certificate of appreciation” from the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Tshering Tobgay, during a conference in the South Asian nation in November.

Schroeder was attending the 6th International Conference of Gross National Happiness: From GNH Philosophy to Praxis and Policy, when he was surprised to be called onstage to receive the award.
He is one of eight recipients from around the world who have contributed to GNH, a strategy based on sustainable socio-economic development, preserving cultural values, conserving the environment and fostering good governance.

Under the aegis of The Business School, Schroeder had been involved in the past in co-designing and delivering a management training project to the public sector in Bhutan.

“These experiences demonstrated to me that there was something interesting and different happening in Bhutan, and that was really the basis for my research project.”

Schroeder’s unique thesis “The Politics of Gross National Happiness” looked at the practical application of the concept on the ground, not just the theory of it — similar to The Business School’s approach to teaching applied, practical applications.

Schroeder’s thesis also led to a symposium, hosted by The Business School at Lakeshore Campus in the spring of 2015, for the NGO community.

“Beyond GDP: Development Alternatives to Growth” sold out quickly and proved to be a success that exceeded expectations. Speakers included Jigmi Y. Thinley, the former prime minister of Bhutan, as well as representatives from organizations including World Wildlife Fund, World Vision, UNICEF and the David Suzuki Foundation.

As for Schroeder, his work continues. “I hope to continue to focus on GNH research, particularly through developing partnerships for The Business School that look for ways to grow ideas and movements.”

International students and International Centre staff offered some time out of their busy agendas to help clean Humber’s Lakeshore Campus last Tuesday, March 29th. This event was part of Humber Earth Week, promoted by the Humber Sustainability team, with the aim of creating awareness of environmental issues, such as transportation alternatives (Smart Commute), recycling and climate change.

In total, there were 56 persons participating (a 27% increase from 2015) – 18 employees and 38 students (a 32% increase from last year’s event). This crew collected 61 bags of garbage from Lakeshore Campus, an increase of 45% from 2015.

“I was proud to see so much enthusiasm amongst our international student body. Our team was certainly the largest at Lakeshore, which is a real demonstration of leadership in our global community” – Matthew McDonald, International Student Advisor

Why I chose Humber – by Victor Wang

Victor at the Humber International Center
This story is written by Victor Wang, one of Humber’s international students in the Electromechanical Engineering – Automation and Robotics program.

I grew up in my hometown Xinxiang, Henan in China. I came to Canada in 2012 to study automation and robotics at Humber College. Just two months after I graduated, I was hired and worked for a year.

I decided to come back to school to study one more year of automation and robotics because the third-year experience and final thesis project will help me advance my career. Humber College has the best environment for learning because of its diversity; it really is a great choice if you want to improve your English speaking skills. In the classroom, the professors are helpful and patient when you have questions; don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Outside of class, I participate in different on-campus events and have been working as a student ambassador for the past two years. Both have opened me up to meeting many new people.

As a student ambassador, I have the chance to assist other international students with their transition to Canada. I’ve met many great international students and made many new friends.

I’m really happy that I chose to study at Humber. I believe that to be successful in your academic studies, you have to be really interested in what you’re studying, and I love my program. Your interest will motivate you, enable you to succeed and prepare you for your future working career.

Enjoy your time at Humber!

Want to hear from our students, check out why they chose Humber here.

83 students from China complete their business program at Humber

Photo of the 2015 graduating Ningbo-Jimei class

For 83 students from Ningbo and Jimei universities in China, April 24 was a big day.

The students are part of an annual program that gives them the opportunity to study business in China for two years, then come to Humber for the final year of their studies. April 24 marked the end of their time at Humber, and was celebrated by a graduation-style ceremony complete with valedictorian address, graduation gowns and lots and lot of smiling photos.

The Ningbo-Humber Joint Partnership Program, which has been in place since 1996, is the college's longest-standing international partnership. Humber entered a similar partnership with the university in Jimei in 2006.

Since August, the Ningbo-Jimei students have had opportunities to learn about Canada and practice their English through cultural events and activities, including ice skating, a Toronto Raptors game and a trip to a local orchard.
