We are saddened to hear about the devastating earthquake that hit Ecuador this past week. There are many staff and students who have friends and family there, without a means to contact them.
This NGO is sourcing solar energy kits so that families in devastated regions can contact love ones (the power or communication sources are now totally destroyed). If you would like to help support this initiative, please visit: rainforestexpeditions.wufoo.com/forms/m13pqw961bgkjgn

SCAPA Stars – February/March 2016 Alumni Updates

$
0
0

It’s only the first week of March and already 2016 is shaping up to be a great year for many School of Creative and Performing Arts alumni.
Acting for Film and Television graduate Hannah Hogan is currently starring in the web series Friends with Benefits. The first four episodes are available to stream for free via Funny or Die.
Steph Tolev, an alumna of the Comedy Writing and Performance program, released her first comedy album, Hot N’ Hungry, to rave a review from Exclaim! (“While many comedians struggle with making a live, intimate performance translate to strictly audio recordings, Tolev's material clears that hurdle effortlessly.”) It’s no surprise the album shot to the top of the iTunes comedy chart!
Fellow Comedy grad K. Trevor Wilson, on the other hand, returned to his first love: acting. Though he’s more widely known for his work as a stand-up comedian, Wilson is now a series regular on Letterkenny, CraveTV’s first original scripted sitcom. Read more about Wilson’s journey from Humber to small screen comedy.
Drummer Anthony Fung, an alumnus of Humber’s K-12 Community Music School, will be part of the 2018 cohort of the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz in Los Angeles. A previous Berklee College of Music scholarship recipient, Fung is the first Canadian accepted to the Institute.
It’s awards season in the music industry, and graduates of Humber’s Bachelor of Music and Jazz Performance Certificate programs are getting noticed! Drummer Ricky Lewis—brother of Humber faculty member, drummer Larnell Lewis—recently played the industry’s biggest stages, the Grammy Awards and the Brit Awards, with Scarborough’s The Weeknd (“Can’t Feel My Face,” “Earned It”). See their Brit Awards performance here.
Closer to home, a number of grads were nominated for 2016 JUNO awards or played on JUNO-nominated recordings. Lauded alumni include Allison Au, Emilie-Claire Barlow, Julian Anderson-Bowes (with Tara Kannangara), Laila Biali (with Tara Davidson), Joel Cassady (with Walk Off The Earth), Feurd (a.k.a. Ian Robertson Moore, with The Elwins), Shamus Currie (with The Sheepdogs), and Emily Ferrell, Nathan Dell-Vandenberg and Chris Weatherstone (all with Lemon Bucket Orkestra).
Humber Theatre Performance grads continue to blaze trails across stage, film and arts management. Recent graduate Yolanda Bonnell juggles a staff administrative position at Native Earth Performing Arts with directing and acting opportunities. She will direct Plum BOMB, written by current student Bilal Baig, at the upcoming Paprika Festival, and she'll follow her recent Rhubarb Festival appearance in bug with a star turn at Factory Theatre in Judith Thompson's The Crackwalker, co-starring fellow Theatre Performance grad and lauded actor-playwrightWaawaate Fobister.
Since leaving Humber, Jesse Ryder Hughes has built a career as an actor-producer-director and the co-founder of Unit 102 Theatre Studio & Actors Co., a Parkdale performance space and acting company. The company concluded a successful production of Red Light Winter in January, and plans to mount Of Mice and Men later this year.
Alumna Yulia Petrauskas’ latest foray into film is the feature End of Days, Inc, which opened at the Carlton Cinema on February 19, and Nawa Nicole Simon, a past Dora Award nominee, finishes her run in a new play, Just for A Moment, on March 6.

Summer classes have just started and the International Centre was pleased to help welcome our new international students at both campuses.

The International Centre ran sessions at North and Lakeshore to welcome our new international students (check out the photos on the International Centre’s Facebook page and a short video on our YouTube channel). The #NewHawk16 (as we call the newcomers) attended the International Students’ Welcome at North Campus on Thursday, May 5 and a special session for Global Business Management students at Lakeshore Campus on Monday, May 9.

The Welcome events were led by Matthew Keefe at North and Matthew McDonald at Lakeshore, who talked about Humber College, academic conduct, getting around campus/surrounding areas, health insurance, counselling services, and housing. They also provided a highlights on the variety of services provided to international students, such as International StudentServices, Global Opportunities, the Global Citizenship Certificate, events, trips and International Education Week. The international team also discussed possibilities of working while studying in Canada and how to apply for permits and visas. Although only a few programs start during summer, Humber College and the International Centre have prepared a calendar full of activities, workshops, trips and other events. See the all the upcoming events here.

As mentioned by Kim Smith, Associate Director of International Admissions and Student Services, “We want all the international students to feel embraced by Humber community and have a great experience while studying at Humber. The International Centre is here to help!”

Humber Alumnus Shortlisted for RBC’s Top 25 Canadian Immigrants Award

March 28, 2016

Renan Orquiza is an alumnus of Humber College, who successfully completed the Engineering Software Skills Enhancement Bridging Program (designed specifically for newcomers to Canada). Despite having arrived in Canada just 3 years ago, Renan has already made several significant contributions to the community. As a result of these contributions, Renan has been shortlisted for the RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrants Award.

Click below to vote for a highly deserving alumnus:
canadianimmigrant.ca/canadas-top-25-immigrants/vote

About Renan:

Philippines-born Renan Orquiza arrived in Canada on May 31, 2013, and unlike other newcomers who were struggling in adapting and landing their desired job within their professional field, he seemed to have planned things out and was able to transition his life smoothly.

He signed up with Career Edge, a non-profit organization that helps bridge internationally trained immigrants into their careers in Canada. And he was hired by a geo-environmental consulting firm based in Markham, Ontario, as an environmental project manager within four months.

While employed, he also participated in a four-month Engineering Bridging Program offered at Humber College, which helps engineering students with networking, resume preparation, interview skills, software skills, and more. He also learned that networking and volunteering were also important to your career in Canada.

With that in mind, he looked for non-profit organizations that he could help. He started volunteering at the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) Mississauga Chapter as a committee member. He helped facilitate a bridge building competition for high school students and was asked to assist in other events within the PEO. In early 2015, he was elected to become one of the executive board members and is currently appointed as the environmental committee chair.

He also volunteers with Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) Authority promote their environmental programs and share information with the public about maintaining and preserving the conservation areas. Orquiza wanted to give back to the community where he and his family were living in, as well as to help conserve the environment for future generations. Because of his efforts, he received a long hours service recognition from CVC. He was also selected as the 2014 recipient of the Newcomer Gem Volunteer Award.

As a member of the grad panel and an alumni of the Engineering Software Skills Enhancement Program at Humber College, he spoke to recent candidates of the program about what his story and tips. One of his proudest accomplishments is mentoring others, which provides him with the opportunity to touch people's lives personally and to get to know others better. Even though he is mentoring others, he realizes that he, too, is learning and growing through the experience. Recently, he decided to take this passion to another level by officially becoming a mentor within the Mentoring Partnership program by the Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council (TRIEC).

At present, he is a registered professional engineer (P.Eng.) within Ontario and working as a project manager at Watters Environmental Group Inc., an environmental consulting firm based in Vaughan, Ontario.

Linda Jin-Troendle, Professor and Coordinator - Global Business Management Program, The Business School, Humber College shares her experience in Krems, Austria

Annually, the IMC University of Applied Science in Krems, Austria, promotes the Masters Days, a series of workshops and lectures uniting professors from all over the world. The event took place April 13-15, 2016 and one of the representatives from Canada was Linda Jin-Troendle, Professor and Coordinator - Global Business Management Program, The Business School, Humber College. Faculty and researchers from Spain, the United States,  Sweden, Finland, Singapore, France, Azerbaijan, and other countries also participated in the Masters Days.

Linda facilitated a workshop based on a case study on Volkswagen with the theme “Acting with professional integrity – what do future business leaders need to know?” After four months of preparation, she was ready to create an interactive workshop experience for 15 Krem’s Master’s students. The main theme of her session was to develop critical thinking on how future professionals can act ethically in a business environment, and how to put Social Corporate Responsibility values into practice.

This event is important for Humber, as it is a great opportunity to share Humber College’s knowledge and also learn from other professors. According to Linda, “Master Days is a global, cross-cultural event and I learned how other professors engage their students. Watching them in action was fantastic! I brought some of their knowledge back to Humber; back to my students and my classrooms.”

Linda also mentioned that Krems is very student centered and cares a lot about the learning experience, “At the end of the day it’s all about the students and how to prepare them to be global citizens. Culturally, it was wonderful to see how their culture overlaps with ours and dialogue is key to achieve that.

Humber Literary Review Fiction Contest Winners

The Humber Literary Review is pleased to announce the inaugural winners of its first annual Emerging Writers Fiction Contest. Bestselling author Kathryn Kuitenbrouwer judged the contest from a longlist of 11 writers that was compiled by the HLR’s editorial collective. Kuitenbrouwer had the following to say about the selected stories: “This batch of stories reminds me of how the emotional concision of the short story as a form holds a kind of meaning. I am privileged in this task to be introduced to some very fine writing, some indelible plots, but most of all many unique and urgent voices. The short story can breathe new life into the world, and this lot of stories accomplishes that and more.”

First prize has been awarded to Brittany Smith for her short story, “Sand.”
Mahak Jain’s “In Transit” took second place.
Georgia Wilder’s “English Lessons” received third place.

The Humber Literary Review, a biannual literary and arts magazine established in 2014 by the English Department of Humber College, publishes interviews, reviews, short fiction, poetry, comics and artwork. Past contributors and interview subjects include Oscar-nominated writer Emma Donoghue; Canada Reads finalist Michael Winter; Sheila Heti; Douglas Coupland; Karen Solie; Russell Smith; Priscila Uppal; Mariko Tamaki; Travis Shilling; Ann-Marie MacDonald, plus many other established and emerging artists.
Issue 5 of the magazine will also include contributions by Wab Kinew, Marina Endicott, artist Kim Dorland, and Parliamentary Poet Laureate George Elliot Clarke. An event to celebrate the winners of the fiction contest, and the launch of issue 5, will take place in Toronto in the spring.

At North Campus, the Meet & Greet was held on Wednesday, May 25, while the Lakeshore event took place on Thursday, May 26. Both events were held outdoors and had a variety of games, music, and free pizza for all participants!

Meet & Greet promotes socialization among international students from different programs and is a great opportunity to make new friends. There were students from India, China, Brazil, Egypt and other countries hanging out together while participating in fun activities. Prizes and swag were given to the students, and the big highlight was a large Canadian flag signed by all the participants!

You can find the best moments on our YouTube channel.

Fibre Optic/Radiant Light 2 is installed in the North Campus Learning Resource Commons, a campus expansion building that houses the campus library, student services, the Registrar’s Office, Student Recruitment, Student Success & Engagement, the International Centre, the School of Liberal Arts & Sciences and administrative offices. The artworks’ position in proximity to natural light allows the 75” by 100” piece to engage in an interplay of pattern, cast colour, light and shadow as onlookers witness a display of colour in the spectrum of cyan, blue, magenta and gold.

The material behind this installation is dichroic glass, an architectural window film that exploits the optical qualities of the material and activates the space creating a new sensorial and ambient experience. Under Lizz Aston’s skilful hand, dichroic film has been projected, drawn and hand-cut, making it a unique installation designed specifically for the space.

Those familiar with Aston’s style will instantly place her exploration of old and new materials and forms of contemporary art in Fibre Optic/Radiant Light 2. Her extensive education has given her a strong framework from which she reflects upon in her own artistic practice:

“In my work, I am inspired by the rich histories of textile production, lace-making and the decorative arts. Focusing on themes surrounding knot-work and interlacement, my work explores the intersection between traditional craft practice, contemporary art and design,” says Aston. “By taking imagery lifted from traditionally hand-made objects, and playing with methods of abstraction using digital tools, my work deconstructs formal patterns in unexpected ways to create a series of three-dimensional large-scale distorted and exploded views.”

This commission was developed through Humber’s Art Collection, which is a part of Humber’s ongoing practice of developing innovative teaching and learning opportunities. The installation is now available for public viewing on the 5th floor of the LRC, in an active public area just outside of the School of Liberal Arts and Science at Humber North Campus.

About HUMBER GALLERIES AND COLLECTIONS:
The Humber Galleries Art Collection complements the activities of our galleries by offering students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to encounter art around the campuses, making it part of the day-to-day culture of the college, but also providing access to integrated curriculum planning, student research and skills development. Its purpose is to provide opportunities for students, staff and the community to learn and grow through interaction with a diverse collection of contemporary Canadian art and artists.

About LIZZ ASTON:
Aston’s distinct style of working with delicate yet sculptural materials has earned her ample attention in magazines like Canadian Art and beyond. In addition, she has exhibited her work across Canada and in the United States, Australia and South Korea and has partnered with H&M Canada for Scotiabank Nuit Blanche, 3M and The Japanese Paper Place. Aston, who holds an Advanced Diploma in Crafts & Design from Sheridan College, is currently completing an Industrial Design degree from OCAD University.
