F building addition hosts bioscience, cadaver labs

funeral services students.(Marlee Greig)
New one-of-a-kind labs and state-of-the-art technologies are hoped to bring innovation to Humber School of Health Sciences learning capabilities as part of Humber’s North campus F building expansion.

Two floors have been added atop the existing F building at the college.

Students in the School of Health Sciences gained access to the labs for the first time in September after the labs were opened last April, said Biotechnology program coordinator Dr. Mojgan Rezvani.

New bioscience, pharmacy, funeral services and anatomy labs are now operational and play a significant part in students’ curriculums. Even biotechnology, a new diploma program offered at Humber received a new lab, said Rezvani.

Laboratories were built with functionality in mind so movable tables, hands-free sinks and drop-down electrical outlets will allow students faster movement around lab space.

Interactive screens, three-dimensional anatomical models and high-tech microscopes will exponentially increase learning, said Dr. Ronald Stewart, the Bioscience program coordinator.

Students will also be taught about their own bodies with the aid of professionally dissected human cadavers and body specimens, said Stewart.

“We are the only publicly-funded college with cadaver labs,” he said. “There are very few schools of anatomy within Ontario overall.

“Most of them are large universities like the University of Toronto, McMaster, Western, Waterloo, Queen’s, and then there is Humber. So we are part of that small family of big universities,” said Stewart.

“We put significant effort into teaching and learning anatomy and physiology so that in the end they have a really good foundation of knowledge,” he said.

“There’s no question when you complete your diploma or degree here, you’re going to learn your anatomy and physiology.”

On July 28th, 70 students from Ningbo University arrived at Humber. For the last two weeks the students have been participating in The Business School’s Summer Orientation Program at the Lakeshore Campus. Throughout this intensive program students will be immersed in an English-only environment where they will learn skills to help them achieve academic success, improve their writing abilities, strengthen their speaking and listening skills, and prepare for their academic year in the Business Administration Program.

Outside of their daily classes, the students have been participating in a number of excursions including visiting Wasaga Beach and the CN Tower. Most recently, the students participated in an Urban Adventure race that had students compete against each other to find secret locations throughout downtown Toronto.

Christine Hagen's Study Abroad experience in India 2016

My name is Christine Hagen and I am currently a second year Digital Business Management student. During my first year of studies at Humber, I really wanted to make my education count. I participated in various events and conferences outside of class time to learn more about my current program and the possible careers it had to offer.

My interest in studying abroad rose after taking a class on Social Entrepreneurship and learning about various entrepreneurs and how they decided to take their current path.

I figured this would be a great incentive to try out the Study Abroad program at Humber to see if I could come up with new innovative ideas. I researched more about the study abroad programs Humber offered and applied for India. I felt it was a good duration to overcome the “holiday” feeling and truly get a feel for living in the country. The India trip lasted four weeks.

While I was in India, I have learned more than I ever anticipated. I am often still learning principles taught in India, after being home for two months. My study abroad program has offered me insight on myself, others, and various situations.

For anyone looking to study abroad, I would recommend a summer program. It allows you to gain credits, while feeling like you are a tourist at the same time. Personally, I had the opportunity to learn about India and their culture, religions, ways of life, while learning more about who I am. What my personal morals and beliefs are and how I would do something differently. There are no true words to explain the experience I had. All I can say is I am thankful for the opportunity to go and I will cherish the memories and lessons I have learned for a lifetime.

A Balancing Act

It is not an easy task. Pursing a college degree can be very difficult and couple that with the struggles associated with living away, the experience can be overwhelming. For this reason it is essential to be social, develop relationships, and meet new people as they are likely going through similar struggles as you. To help insure you have the best possible time while abroad at Humber, here are some tips and tricks to help ease your transition.

1.Be available

It can be tempting to study in your room, eat in your room, and do practically everything in your residence. However, to fully enjoy your stay in Canada communicating with other students is essential as it will allow you to make friends! Try and study in public areas and hangout in lounges
rather than on your bed.

2.Join a group

Colleges and universities in Canada have a large selection of student groups and clubs where you can get involved and meet new people. Enjoy playing an instrument? Are you an advocate for green peace? Enjoy playing video games or board games? There are clubs for just about anything! Joining a club allows you to socialize and have fun while meeting likeminded people.

3.Volunteer

Volunteering is not only an invaluable addition to your resume but is but another way you can get yourself out there and become more comfortable in a new country. Find something your passionate about and dedicate a few hours a week to helping a cause!

4.Be Confident

Although it may be unnerving at the time, the best way to meet new people is to start conversations! If you are sitting down waiting for class, in a coffee shop, cafeteria, lounge, start a conversation with the person next to you. Who knows where a simple “hello” can lead to!

It can be a scary experience living abroad but you do not have to go through it alone. Be Bold and meet new people!

Study Permit

The most important immigration document is your study permit. As an international student you are in Canada as a temporary resident with permission to study. If you have questions about your study permit please consult one of the International Student Advisors. Have you submitted a copy of your study permit to the International Centre (North: LRC 2ndfloor; Lakeshore:  Room H100A)? Please do this as soon as possible.

·        Don’t be caught unawares, check the expiration date of your study permit. If you allow your study permit to expire without making an application to extend then you have fallen out of status and are no longer permitted to study until your status has been restored.  For more information visit here.

·        Have you made a copy of your study permit? It’s good to have a backup copy in case you lose your document. Don’t forget to scan a copy of your passport at the same time.

Co-op Work Permit

Do you have a mandatory work component in your program? The ability to work OFF-CAMPUS attached to your STUDY PERMIT does NOT transfer to your academic work requirement.

Don’t get left behind, apply as soon as possible as processing times are subject to change. You are not authorized to start your work placement UNTIL you receive the work permit regardless of whether the placement is paid or unpaid.

If you have questions please contact an International Student Advisor. A step-by-step guideline can be found on the international webpage if you missed one of our workshops.

If your study permit makes no reference to working off-campus you might be eligible to have it amended. To see if you meet the eligibility requirements to work go here. However if your permit states that you are NOT permitted to work off campus you will have to apply for a new study permit.

It is important to note that if you’re an EAP student you will not be eligible to work off-campus, therefor not able to change the conditions until you start a regular full-time program.

To be paid you will require a Social Insurance Number (SIN number). For more information about social insurance numbers go to the following website. You can apply for a Social Insurance Number at a Service Canada office. To find a Service Canada Office near your house searchby your postal code.

Working in Canada Is an excellent way of gaining Canadian work experience, honing your skills and earning money for extras. Enjoy working in Canada, but do it legally!

Entering Canada

Imagine being stuck in another country because you misplaced or do not have the required documentation to return. This is a definite possibility if you do not take the time to attain the appropriate documentation. With the exception of citizens of the United States, St. Pierre or Miquelon, all others require either a valid Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to re-enter Canada. Not sure what document you require? Go here.

Are you from Mexico? Starting December 1, 2016 you will require an eTA to enter Canada. Processing time can vary for both the TRV and eTA but typically it is one month for a TRV; and often mere minutes for an eTA. If you have a valid study permit your TRV application will be processed within Canada.

Safe travels!

Introducing, Your New Dean

You may or may not know that the Humber International Centre recently hired a new Dean to lead and support International efforts across the Humber community. Our past Dean, Diane Simpson, left in September to pursue her Ph.D., and thus a search began for someone to fill the big role.

Meet Andrew (Drew) Ness:

Andrew has had a long history working with academic institutions; he has dedicated over 30 years of his life to education and more recently the internationalization of higher education. He appreciates the importance of international education in bolstering academic learning environments and adding diversity of perspectives to the classroom, group project and COOP environment. Although only at Humber for ten weeks, he has already noticed some distinct differences from some of his past roles. The primary one being how sociable, kind, and inviting both Humber students and staff have been. He stressed how helpful everyone is and cited that as to why the acclimatization process has been an easy one. Andrew (or Drew, as we know him in the IC) said that choosing to work at Humber was one of the few times he made a purposeful leap in his career, no matter if it was convenient or not. He truly believes Humber is a special place to be.

Since the holidays are right around the corner, we decided to ask Drew to answer a few questions you’ll want to know his answers to:

Q: Can you share a favourite holiday movie students may have not seen?
A:“A Christmas Carol” - the 1938 version – and specifically one scene that he believes is one of the best holiday movie scenes ever made."
Q: What do you plan to do with your holiday break?
A:“After a semester-full of new learning, it’s time to relax with the friends and family to re-charge the batteries.”
Q: Any tips for shoveling snow all this snow coming over the weekend?
A:“Use your knees, not your back!”
All told, Andrew is an exciting choice as new Dean of International, who we know brings a wealth of experience to Humber scene. The International Centre is ecstatic to have him, and you should be too.

At Humber, we are committed to improving the experience of our students, so we asked an independent research agency (i-graduate) to gather feedback on the experiences of international students at the College. Thank you to the 1141 current students who took the opportunity to tell us what’s working, what’s frustrating and what you think of your college experience so far.

We will receive the survey results in early 2017 and start reviewing them to learn how we can further improve Humber to meet the needs of our students.

As part of the survey process, one respondent was awarded an iPad. Congralations to the winner, Heena Balu!

Braving the Canadian Cold

You have the toque, you’ve bundled up and braved the December cold snaps, and may have even started to think the worst is over - but my friends, there are still many months of Canadian weather ahead! To keep you motivated to get out there and experience (and maybe even revel in) Canada’s infamous season, here are some tips to help get you through the remainder of the Canadian winter, in style:

1.  Don’t hide out – make it an adventure! Don’t be afraid to venture out on day trips and experience what makes Toronto and Canada great:

a.       Experience a Toronto Maple Leafs or Marlees hockey game, practice, or try out skating of your own! Check local arena schedules for skate rentals public skate times, or other hockey-related events at facilities such as the Mastercard Centre for Hockey Excellence.

b.      Hit up a local ski hill – the International Centre trips make this an affordable experience (see January calendar blog postor check out one of several other hills right here in the GTA!

c.       If the arts are more your scene, bundle up and take a stroll to check out the fantastic Winter Stations design installations on the beaches of East Toronto. Although it’s alright to spend some cold winter nights bundled up at home with some Canadian hot chocolate, try not to make a habit of it!

2. Sleep in and are likely going to be late for class? Make a habit of keeping your hats, mitts and scarf near (but NOT touching) a heating or quickly in the dryer to have a quick and cozy way to warm up on sleepy, snowy mornings!

3. Layers. Wear multiple thin layers of clothing versus throwing on one thick sweater as it allows you to adjust for fluctuating temperatures and ensure you are comfortable at all times. Not only does it have clear functional benefits but it can also be fashionable. What are you waiting for, get layering!

4. Keep a towel at the front door. It is a simple hack, but when you come home covered in snow, it will allow you to keep all the water and salt from the sidewalks at your front door.

5. Get out of here! If you’ve given it your best but still yearn for a break from the cold, make like many Canadians and take advantage of deals on winter getaways to popular warm destinations such as the southern US, Cuba, Mexico and the Caribbean. There are a variety of hot locations you can fly to for reasonable prices so take advantage of our proximity and your reading week – just make sure to do your research and talk to an International Student Advisor to find out what kind of travel documentation and insurance you’ll require to get there and back safely!

Test out these tips to make staying in the Canadian cold more comfortable and exciting – and it’ll be gone before you know it!

Study Permit Essentials

$
0
0
Before making any assumptions about your eligibility to study at Humber – ask yourself these key questions:

  • ·      Do you have the proper documents to study?
Often students interchange the words “visa” and “permit”. A study permit is a paper document, whereas a visa is the counterfoil or sticker affixed inside a permit. If you are enrolled in a program that is six months or more, you require a study permit.

If you were previously studying in Canadadoes your study permit allow you to study at a post-secondary institution, i.e. college or university? Does your study permit authorize you to study at a Designated Learning Institution? If you answered “no” to either of these questions, you must speak to an International Student Advisor as soon as possible as you require a new study permit to ensure eligibility to pursue your studies at Humber.

  • Did you convert your Letter of Introduction to a Study Permit when you arrived in Canada?
Prior to coming to Canada your embassy or the visa centre in your home country provided you with a Letter of Introductionto present when you entered Canada. Did the officer at the border convert this letter to a study permit? If you did not receive your permit then it is important that you go to the International Centre and speak with an International Student Advisoras soon as possible. Without a study permit you are not eligible to attend school.

  • ·      Have you checked your study permit to ensure all the information is correct?
If you haven’t already done so please take a moment to check your permit for errors in name, gender, and date of birth or other conditions set on your permit.

  • ·      Did you create a reminder in your calendar about the expiry date of your permit?
Three to four months prior to the expiry of you study permit you should make an application to extend, if required to. If you allow your status to expiry without…..

  • Have you submitted a copy of your study permit to the International Centre (LRC 2nd Floor NORTH; Room H100A LAKESHORE)?
If you recently arrived in Canada, or if you are a returning student who extended their study permit please take a copy to the International Centre.

This is a good time to make a copy for yourself and save it somewhere safe. You never know when you require that backup copy, e.g. accidently throw your permit in the laundry, misplace it or have it stolen, etc.
