Call for Board Members for CASSA

The Council of Agencies Serving South Asians (CASSA) is an umbrella organization of agencies, groups, and individuals that provide services to South Asian Communities.




Mandate:

CASSA is an umbrella organization that supports and advocates on behalf of existing as well as emerging South Asian agencies, groups, and communities in order to address their diverse and dynamic needs. CASSA’s goal is to empower the South Asian Community. CASSA is committed to the elimination of all forms of discrimination from Canadian society.

Qualifications:

CASSA's Board of Directors is an 11-member volunteer community board. We are seeking to fill three (3) board vacancies and are looking for individuals with skills and experience in any of the following areas: accounting; human resources; non-profit financial management; grant writing & fundraising; and human rights & legal services. Previous board experience is an asset. We strongly encourage applications from individuals active in CASSA’s member agencies.

Key Responsibilities
 
•    Attend monthly Board Meetings and the Annual General Meeting
•    Participate on Board Committees and initiatives
•    Approximately 8-10 hours/month time commitment
•    Participate in the on-going development and implementation of a long term vision and  strategic plan for CASSA
•    Support and participate in the activities of the organization including fundraising, community education and social justice
•    Ensure the programs and services reflect the mission and vision of the agency 

Applications should consist of a resume and a short cover letter, stating your interest in joining CASSA and how you meet the required skills and qualifications. Board members serve a 2-year term.

Reboot your IT career with Humber bridging program

It has only been about eight months since Andrew O. Hewitt immigrated to Canada from Jamaica, and the IT professional quickly found himself plugged in to the Canadian labour market. That is thanks in large part to Humber College’s Mobile Systems Integration Bridging Program.

Bridging program for IT professionals

Hewitt was formally trained in chemical technology at the University of Technology in Jamaica, but then found his “true calling” in the field of IT and furthered his technology training and certifications, including as a certified project manager. “In Jamaica, I had a small consulting business and provided outsourced [IT] services to companies from the automotive, manufacturing, retail and finance sectors and even educational institutions,” says Hewitt.

Despite his success in landing the temporary work, he leaped at the chance to take the Humber program.

Program offers technical and professional development

After graduating from the program, Hewitt quickly landed work as a technical support analyst at a managed IT service provider, supporting clients primarily in the energy industry. “This has provided a great opportunity to apply much of what I’ve learned at Humber across various technologies,” he says.

Hewitt says the career planning skills he also learned at Humber helped immensely. “The resumé and interview preparation was critical and went a long way to preparing me for handling different types of scenarios for interview sessions,” he says. “I have no doubt that my time spent at Humber played an integral role in me attaining my current position and now performing at the highest level.”

The bridging program is designed for internationally trained immigrants with education and experience in information technology, computer science or engineering (computer, electronics or electrical). The 15-week program focuses on training participants in the software demanded by Canadian employers, emphasizing industry-specific concepts and skills in computer networking, information security, installation and configuration of servers in a virtualized environment with an emphasis on operating systems. In addition, the program offers program participants career planning information and strategies, and supports them in their job search up to one year after program completion.

But, after arriving in Canada, finding work in his field was a challenge. “Initially there was some difficulty. Much is said about the need for Canadian experience and it was clear that some companies with which I interviewed wanted more local work background. After much perseverance, I was fortunate to land a six-week position with an IT firm on a project for the Toronto Public Library. This happened to be right around the time I was also accepted for the Humber bridging program.”

“I specifically wanted to broaden my knowledge in the IT field through a program that would also prepare me to utilize that knowledge in the Canadian workplace,” he says. “The program stood out from others, offering exactly what I was looking for in terms of technical and professional development.”

Working Off Campus

You may be eligible to work off campus if you have an off-campus work permit, authorization to work letter (issued by CIC) or meet the following criteria:

Have a valid study permit that gives you authorization to work
Be a full-time student in a program that leads to a degree, diploma or certificate that is six months in length or longer

If the above applies you are eligible to work up to 20 hours per week during the regular academic session and full-time during scheduled breaks, such as the winter and summer holidays or spring break.

Important Information: You must stop working on the day you no longer meet the above eligibility requirements (e.g., if you are no longer a full-time student during an academic session.)

Graduating

Congratulations to all of our Students who are in their final semester of study!

Before we say farewell, here is some important information for you.

Hopefully when your study permit was issued it gave you an additional 90 days after the semester ends, i.e. November 20th 2016 for students finishing in Summer 2016. If not we strongly advise you extend your study permit to allow time to apply for your Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) .

Learn more about the Eligibility requirements for the PGWP and the length of the work permit you will receive by Clicking Here.

In order to apply for your PGWP you will require your:
  • Confirmation of Graduation
  • Final Transcript (the transcript must say Credential Awarded to be considered your final transcript).

These documents are typically available 5-6 weeks after the last day of class; you will be notified by email when the documents are available for pick up.

Important Information: Your Study Permit must also still be valid when you apply for your PGWP. Learn more about applying for your PGWP by Visiting Here.

About the Award

RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Awards is an annual people's choice awards campaign that celebrates Canadian Immigrants.

Renan has beaten out stiff competition from across the country to make the Top 25. You know it's a big deal when you're on the same list as Canada's Minister of National Defence, Harjit Sajjan!

About Renan

Philippines-born Renan Orquiza arrived in Canada on May 31, 2013, and unlike other newcomers who were struggling in adapting and landing their desired job within their professional field, he seemed to have planned things out and was able to transition his life smoothly. 

While employed, Renan participated in the four-month Engineering Bridging Program offered at Humber College, which helps engineering students to upgrade their technical skills, as well as soft skills. 

Despite having arrived in Canada just 3 years ago, Renan has already made several significant contributions to the community. 

As a volunteer with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), he helped facilitate a bridge building competition for high school students and was asked to assist in other events within the PEO. In early 2015, he was elected to become one of the executive board members and is currently appointed as the environmental committee chair. 

He also volunteers with Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) Authority promote their environmental programs and share information with the public about maintaining and preserving the conservation areas. Because of his efforts, he received a long hours service recognition from CVC. He was also selected as the 2014 recipient of the Newcomer Gem Volunteer Award. 

As a member of the grad panel of the Engineering Software Skills Enhancement Program at Humber College, he shares his advice and experiences with other newcomer students with the hope of aiding their professional development in Canada.

At present, he is a registered professional engineer (P.Eng.) within Ontario and working as a project manager at Watters Environmental Group Inc., an environmental consulting firm based in Vaughan, Ontario. 

All these contributions have resulted in Renan securing the prestigious RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrants Award. We cannot be happier for Renan and take great pride in sharing this story.

We're sure this is just one of many more awards to come!

Meet new International Student Advisor: Laurie Bradford

You might have seen her sitting at Matthew’s or Candace’s desk a couple of times, or even walk in to see her for your inquiries; regardless, the name Laurie Bradford has likely popped into your inbox.
Laurie joined the International Centre team in March 2016, but she has been on the international scene since 2004. “I actually worked for the Ningbo-Jimei Program for 10 years,” Laurie said. She had many roles from faculty staff, program coordinator to program manager.
“I think what brings me to the International Centre is the scene. I just missed being around international students and helping them,” said Laurie. Aside from her professional experience, Laurie has been travelling most of her life; she was just 14 years old when she first traveled to Venezuela. It takes more than 10 fingers to count all the countries she visited throughout her life: “I’ve been to Mexico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Brazil, Peru, Korea, Guam, Thailand, Laos, El Salavador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica.”

Fast forward to five years after her first visit abroad, she decided to study for a year in Mexico. “I think Mexico has been a part of me ever since; it definitely shaped me into who I am today and ahora puedo hablar español,”said Bradford which means “now I can speak Spanish.”

Another fun fact is not only that she’s multilingual but also she used to be in a band and toured across the United States. “I started touring in 1994 and went across the States and Canada for the next five years,” she said. When asked if she could play any instruments, “my voice is my Instrument,” she answered. So if you get the chance to hear her sing someday, consider yourself lucky.
 
After her musical career, Laurie, still craving for more adventures, decided to go to South Korea. She stayed in Seoul and taught English as a second language. Now after more than 16 years of exploring diversity and learning new cultures, Laurie is now available full time to help all Humber International students for advice and Inquiries.
 
She’s available at Lakeshore campus every Wednesday and the rest of the weekdays at North campus.

Humber Applied Technology Dean wins Award for Championing Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Activities

Denise Devlin-Li, Dean of Humber’s School of Applied Technology was honoured this year as the inaugural recipient of the Humber Diversity Committee, Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion Award for 2015-2016. The award, which recognizes outstanding dedication and commitment to increase inclusiveness, was presented on International Women’s Day by Nancy Simms, Director of Humber’s Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Diversity.

Ms. Devlin-Li’s efforts have had a measurable effect: for more than 2 years, at least 700 students in Applied Technology programs receive human rights education in one of their classes and over 98% of full-time faculty have completed human rights training; this year, more than 1200 students as well as 250 faculty have attended a LBTQ+ inclusive training.

These statistics notwithstanding, the impact that championing these activities have toward shaping attitudes and empowering others to support equity and diversity extends beyond measure.

Congratulations, Denise! Thank you for being a role model and leader in addressing complex equity issues and advancing equity and inclusion at Humber.

Reading Between the Lines: Controversial Immigration Advising Cases

This November, Dalyce Newby, International Student Advisor in the International Centre and Nassime Yahyaei, Immigration Advisor from the University of Toronto, will be presenting “Reading Between the Lines: Controversial Immigration Advising Cases” at the Canadian Bureau for International Education Annual Conference.

This will be an interactive session that you will not want to miss! Participants will be engaged by challenging immigration advising cases that impact all areas of international student life in Canada. Participants will also be able to discuss their own stories and experiences and compare their own views with the presenters’ best practices. This event is sure to spark an interesting debate among presenters and international students alike.

The following are a few of the controversial cases of interest:

  • Institution letters that hinder applications for visa, study permit and work permit
  • On and off-campus work eligibility of International students who are obliged to take a part-time course-load during their final two academic terms
  • Common criminal and medical misrepresentations
This will be a great opportunity to educate yourself on current immigration policies and the way they may affect your international study experience in the future. We hope to see you there!

International Grad Reception - June 2016

An evening of friends, food and celebration. The annual International Graduate Reception held on June 6 was once again a resounding success. The event presented opportunities for international alumni to share their Humber success stories, mingle, and record their favourite Humber memory on video. Alumni participated in the reception along with notable Humber administration including the VP of Advancement and External Affairs and the Dean of International.

Both the VP, Dean of International, and alumni delivered memorable speeches to the graduates. They told their stories, stressed that the alumni are prepared for the world ahead, and encouraged them to maximize their potential in life post-graduation.  The event left all in attendance with an additional spark of self confidence in their abilities. We at Humber International are proud of each and every new Humber alumni and wish all of our graduates the best for their future. Alumna Success Story: Somya Dixit

We recently had the pleasure of catching up with Somya Dixit, one of our alumni; it is a wonderful feeling, listening to amazing stories and seeing the impact a career-focused education can create.


Somya Dixit, a 2015 #HumberGlobal grad
Somya, a 2015 graduate of Humber’s postgraduate certificate in Public Relations (PR), said her reason to come to Canada and study at Humber was to embrace a fresh perspective and strengthen her learning curve as a seasoned PR professional. As she says, in life, we often forget to take a new look at different look at things around us; she got an opportunity and went for it! She was a postgraduate-level student who didn’t want to study just anything; she came across Humber because it was one of the rare places offering such a program. In addition, as she notes, “Humber holds a lot of credibility in the professional world.”

She says that going back to school felt awkward after being a working professional. Going to school was difficult; it was a reverse: boardroom to classroom experience. All the same, she says that her experience working at the McDonald’s corporate office and Edelman eased her transition to Canada and Humber as well. She had clear expectations from the course and its significance for her career path.

During her course, she enjoyed the intensity, the fast-paced nature of the course; it might have caught her off guard but she says it’s exciting with new things to learn every moment, a definite value addition to your skills and qualification.

She advises other international students that they will need extra time when it comes to career guidance, as moving to another country is fun but at the same time challenging. Her advice? “Keep your documentation perfect and follow a proactive approach. Talk to people, get help while taking the right decisions and do something that results into a long time job, hopefully via an internship.”


Somya now works at energiPR in Toronto.


She thanks Humber college for enhancing her skills, while adding this for future Humber grads: “Believe in yourself. It’s about learning. Be proactive in research and network. Do not solely depend on the college. You are absolutely equal to everyone and take that as an advantage. Meet people, talk to people, make mistakes and learn. Be open to conversations.I was excited getting back to work and re-energize my work life. Learn new things, understand a new market and implement different ideas and strategies. I did a thorough research on best PR agencies in Toronto who have a good reputation and clientele and then energiPR happened. I am very fortunate to be a part of such a wonderful organization and work with the most amazing people and do work that matters. It is all about learning new things – I personally dislike mundane lifestyle so working on different projects has helped me evolve as a mature PR professional – Again, life is all about learning and experimenting. Make mistakes but don't repeat them."

Why Algonquin Camping Trip is the best trip I had with Humber and why I think you should join too

Summer of 2015 wasn’t all sunshine for me, It was my first time living on my own. When I was asked to go with Humber to Algonquin, I was a bit hesitant, as much as I love the outdoor; I have never been a fan of camping. Growing up in Indonesia the only outdoor related trips I got to participate was a school retreat they do once in three years.

It took me one google search to convince myself to go, the pictures don’t lie, Algonquin is one of the best thing I have seen with my eyes. In those three days we were not only taught how to canoe, build our own fire, and got to see the most beautiful night sky, there was this sublime atmosphere surrounding us all throughout the whole trip, something I never felt when I’m in the city.

I made friends with everyone on the trip, but aside from just adding more people on my contact list, I learned so much from Amir and our group. The bond we shared on that three day trip was beyond what I expected. I learned to sing my first hindi song and made so many friends that I'm still so much in touch with. This trip has inspired me to get back to nature and it opened my eyes to another side of Canada.

The best experience though was swimming in the lake for the first time, right when I hit the water I felt so lucky to have come there. Just a month after my trip with Humber I decided to venture to another provincial park, but it wasn’t Algonquin, and it wasn’t with Humber. So although the view was as breathtaking, I realized how irreplaceable that first trip was.

Humber an attractive option for international students

Flora Fan had no other school on her mind than Humber College when deciding where to study in Canada this past fall.

The first-year Food and Nutrition program student from China fell in love with Canada while visiting Vancouver in 2012. She has always wanted to come back and study here.

Fan is one of the 3,400 international students attending Humber from more than 100 countries. What immediately caught her attention was the fact that it is Canada’s largest college, but she was also intrigued by what her program offers.

“The courses designed to my program interest me and equips me with necessary knowledge for my career,” Fan said.

Humber has a new International Centre in the North campus LRC that helps international students with enrollment, study permits and adjusting to living in Canada.

Fan said that at times, being far from home can be lonely but added Humber offers many services to make the adjustment easier. One big thing that helps her and fellow students adjust, Fan said, are the clubs run by international students.

“The clubs are like a family for students from different countries,” she said.

Anastasia Kvasniuk, a first-year architecture student from Russia, found Humber’s school spirit and short commute to downtown to be very important to her when choosing her school.

“I toured many schools in the area,” she said. “Humber was the only one that was close to downtown, had crazy school spirit for their sports and had a nice residence building.” Humber has international recruiters who each specialize in a continent. They travel to their assigned continent for two to six weeks to expose potential students to information about Humber and encourage them to apply.

Linda Chao, associate director and Asia International Recruiter of 10 years, said the diversity within and outside of Humber is one of the main attractions for international students coming here to study.

“It is a very diverse area, many international students have family who live close by,” Chao said.

International and Canadian students being together in classes is a great way for both parties to learn about each other’s cultures and lifestyles and can help give a better understanding of where they come from and why they chose to come to Canada, she said.

Summer 2016 Events

The expression “the city never sleeps” certainly holds true in Toronto. At any point in time on any given day one can find something entertaining to do. This summer there are a variety of events happening in the city ranging from cultural, music and entertainment, and food! There is something that will appeal to everyone.

On the cultural end there is Toronto Caribana, the Indie Boat Hop, the Waterfront Artisan Market, and the Toronto Burlesque Festival. If loud music is what you yearn for, there is the Island Soul Festival, the Sonicboombox Toronto Expo Afterparty, and so much more. If you want to relax, Toronto has many beautiful beaches available along with open air movie experiences such as free movies at the Harbour front Centre.
